Foreign Teachers’ Instruction Manual

  1. Arrival & Departure

  1. Arrival

    1. Documents Required

      The foreign expert (teacher) shall present all the materials for a teaching position in China after he or she arrives at the university and all the documents should be valid.

    2. Key

      Each foreign expert/teacher will get one key from the International Cooperation & Exchange (ICEO) after the accommodation check-in. If the key is missing, the foreign teacher should inform the ICEO immediately.

    3. Employment Contract

      The foreign expert/teacher needs to sign the employment contract with the university as a support to the following procedures. The university will help to prepare the foreign expert certificate, the local residence permit and the campus library card.

  2. Departure

    1. Before the foreign expert/teacher’s final departure, he or she shall complete all his or her working obligations and send the required information to the co-teacher. His or her college or institute will sign a paper to certify that he or she has finished all the work before he or she leaves the university.

    2. As a rule, before the foreign expert/teacher finally leaves the campus, he or she is required to return the campus library card to the university. According to his or her performance in teaching position, the ICEO shall sign a reference letter for the foreign expert/teacher.

    3. Accommodation Check-out

      The foreign teacher shall keep his apartment clean and tidy before his final departure. The university will sign and retrieve the key since it is in order.

  1. Living & Welfare

  1. Accommodation

    Apartment: Each foreign expert/teacher can have an independent apartment, including bedroom, living room and kitchen.

    1. For each apartment, the university provides air conditioner, refrigerator, washing machine, TV set, computer with Internet and printer, etc.

    2. The university will cover water supply, Internet and electricity.

    3. Keeping pets wherever in campus or apartment is not allowed.

    4. It is to be understood that the accommodation is only provided to the foreign experts/teachers. Their family members can pay short-term visits to foreign experts/teachers and have their limited stay on our campus.

    5. The foreign expert/teacher should take care of the apartment. If he or she has to leave the apartment for a long period of time, he or she needs to cut off the electricity power to avoid a fire accident.

    6. The foreign teacher is supposed to live on campus. Off-campus accommodation is only allowed with the permission from the University. In this case, he is supposed to be responsible for his own security. The foreign teacher living out of campus should cover all the related cost by himself.

  2. Daily Maintenance

    Without getting the permission from the university, it is not allowed to move anything out of the apartment or lend to somebody else. For any possible problems of the apartment, the foreign expert/teacher shall contact the ICEO for help. The university will make arrangement and cover the maintenance fee. However, the foreign expert/teacher should pay the fee if he or she causes (is responsible for) the problem.

  3. Vocation & Holidays

    The foreign expert/teacher enjoys the following Chinese traditional festivals/holidays: New Year Day, The Spring Festival, Labor Day, National Day and other festivals or vocations permitted as per the relevant Chinese laws and regulations. Foreign teachers should responsible for themselves during summer and winter holidays and other festivals.

  4. Transportation

    For the activities organized by the University, the university will cover the arrangement and fee. For private transport use, the foreign expert/teacher needs to pay himself or herself. In case of emergency, the foreign expert/teacher could ask the university for private use of a car, he or she will pay the fee themselves.

    The foreign expert/teacher who lives outside the campus shall go to work on time and be  responsible for his or her own safety in the transportation between the university and his  or her residence in working days and during the days off.

  5. Mail Delivery

    The foreign expert/teacher will be financially responsible for his or her private mail delivery. ICEO will inform the foreign expert/teacher to fetch his or her letters or packages.

  6. Travel expenses

    1. Each semester the university offers the foreign expert/teacher a sum of RMB 1100Yuan for travelling within China. The foreign expert/teacher will be paid by the end of each semester.

    2. Flight ticket:

      For one-year contract, the university will provide RMB 10,000 Yuan for theflight tickets.

  7. Insurance

    The university will cover insurances for each foreign expert/teacher. Further information refers to the insurance policy.

  8. free Chinese course

    The University will give a free Chinese course to the foreign teachers.

  2. Teaching Periods

    1. Each foreign teacher is required to give a maximum of 16 class periods (each period refers to 45 minutes) per week, including German corner (once a week).

    2. Each year the foreign teacher is required to give a lecture in each semester for all the students of the university.

    3. Teaching quality control: the university will examine the foreign teacher’s teaching quality by checking his or her teaching plans, auditing his or her lectures, and organizing students’ discussion meetings, and then give feedbacks to the foreign teacher for improvement.

  3. Teaching Requirements

    1. Course books for all the courses are offered by the university, though the foreign expert/teacher is encouraged to use his or her own teaching materials.

    2. Within the first two weeks of one semester, the foreign expert/teacher is required to submit a written teaching plan for the whole semester, which should include:

        1. A general teaching outline of the course

        2. The teaching content of the course, including time allocation

        3. The source and general description of the self-prepared material to be used

        4. The teaching methodology to adopt

        5. Types of exercises (oral or/and written)

    1. After the first few weeks of teaching, the foreign expert/teacher needs to get the students’ feedback of the teaching, and make adjustments to his or her teaching plan if necessary.

  4. Assignment & Examination

  1. Written assignments are a must (“Oral English” might be optional), and the foreign expert/teacher is required to check half, if not all at one time. At least the results of three assignments for each student should be recorded as the student’s term achievements. The average result of the assignments of each student will count for 30% of his or her final term grade, 70% of which will be given to the final examination.

  2. Students’ attendance will be recorded. If any student is absent from class for 1/3 or more of the total teaching periods, or if any student has only completed 2/3 or less of all the written assignments, he or she will be deprived of the right to take the final examination. And the foreign expert/teacher is required to inform the departmental secretary of teaching one week before the final examination actually takes place.

  3. Cheating in the examination is a serious blunder, and the invigilator (in this case the foreign expert/teacher) should try to stop it from happening. If it should happen, the invigilator must catch the cheater on the spot, and inform the departmental secretary of teaching about it as soon as the examination ends.

  1. Rescheduling teaching periods

    According to the Chinese tradition, the university will reschedule the teaching periods and make other arrangements before or after the holidays. The foreign expert/teacher should follow the departments’ arrangements.

  2. Working

    1. ICEO

      ICEO is responsible for the employment, accommodation, daily life, salary, travelling, medical care and other matters on the part of the foreign expert/teacher.

      Responsibility division:

      Ms. Xu Xiaofeng: Chief, in charge of the whole office work

      Mr. Xiang Yin: Deputy Chief, in charge of the work related to the foreign experts

              Zhang Ping(Jane): Appointed Correspondent, responsible for the detailed affairs with the   foreign  experts.

  1. Appointed Correspondent & Co-teacher

    1. The Appointed Correspondent is the one the foreign experts/teachers first turn to for help with regard to daily life affairs.

    2. The co-teacher is the one the foreign teachers first turn to for help with regard to teaching affairs.

  2. Working elsewhere outside the campus

    1. Without getting the permission from the university, the foreign expert/teacher is not allowed to undertake elsewhere any work not related to the original job, for instance, doing part-time job, running business in and out of the university, etc.

    2. If, for any reason, the foreign expert/teacher wants to do extra work irrelevant to the contracted responsibility outside the university, he or she should submit a written application to ICEO in advance for approval by the university. The foreign expert/teacher should provide the university with the name and address of the potential employer, the name of the legal person of the employer, the duration of the employment, etc. Another contract shall be signed between the university and the potential employer, if the university approves of it.

    3. If the foreign expert/teacher is invited by other sides outside the university to give language or academic lectures, he should first inform the ICEO for permission.

  3. Working Disciplines

    1. The foreign expert/teacher shall abide by the department teaching rules, follow the university’s regulations and arrangements, and obey the teaching schedule. He or she is not allowed to be late for or absent from class, as well as reschedule lessons or teaching periods without permission. In case of any special occasions that the foreign expert/teacher is not available for teaching on time, no matter how many lessons there are, he or she should contact the co-teacher before it happens, and make up the missing lessons later.

    2. VCD and DVD videos can be adopted in classroom teaching, but the experts/teachers are not allowed to play them during the whole teaching/instruction periods without any task-based activites.

    3. If for any reason the foreign expert/teacher needs to change the teaching classroom, he or she shall inform the co-teacher ahead of schedule for arrangement.

    4. According to the university’s regulations for teachers, the foreign expert/teacher is also expected to arrive at the classroom five minutes ahead of schedule at least, and he or she is not allowed to dismiss the students ahead of the required time.

  1. Daily Regulations

  1. The foreign expert/teacher shall receive the same treatment as the Chinese teachers. He or she shall also observe the Chinese political and social policy, laws, decrees and relevant regulations enacted by the Chinese government. He or she shall respect the Chinese moral standards and customs, and not interfere in the Chinese internal affairs.

  2. The Chinese government pursues (fulfills) a free religion policy. The university will respect the foreign expert/teacher’s private customs and religions, but he or she is not allowed to conduct religious or other activities incompatible with the status as a teacher. Without the permission from the relevant Chinese governmental authorities, the foreign experts/teachers are not allowed to establish any cross-region organizations.

  3. In accordance with the university rules and regulations, the foreign experts/teacher could celebrate his or her own country’s traditional festivals in certain locations, but he or she is required to get the permission from the university ahead of schedule. And the purpose of the activities shall not violate the Chinese political and social policies, laws or regulations. The foreign expert/teacher shall undertake the responsibilities for disobeying the above.

  4. The foreign expert/teacher is required to inform the university ahead of time of posting up any signs, notices or advertisements on notice-boards or delivering any publicity or print-outs. The notices or advertisements if necessary and approved should be placed within certain areas. The foreign expert/teacher shall get the permission from the governmental authorities before issuing any publications to the public out of the university.

  5. In class, the foreign expert/teacher shall not use any aggressive sentences that will harm the feelings of other nations before the students. All the other teaching materials (including books, videos and tapes) shall be subject to the approval by the university in advance.
